DIY J-HORROR and THAT INFAMOUS HEART-SHAPED BOX

I was surfing on youtube, searching for something or rather, as you do, and inadvertently discovered a couple of semi-precious gems, as you do. Those brief little vignettes put together by someone with perhaps a little too much time on their hands; little crazy raisins lost in the giant fruit salad that is youtube. But I found them. And I’m putting them up on the Horrorphile pedestal.
I’m sure there are countless other raisins like these, but these little wrinkled grapes tickled my fancy. If you like your J-Horror, in particular the brilliance that is Ju-On and Ringu, then you’ll love these cleverly contrived pieces of editing and After Effects which appear to be viral ads for a tutorial site called www.homegrownhorror.com. I’m not sure quite how they do it, but it’s very impressive all the same.
Sometimes it’s the simple things that work best. Enjoy these short, sharp shocks.
Late last year I got wind of very exciting news: the re-release of the original version of the Canadian slasher flick My Bloody Valentine (1981). This movie has always been one of favourite stalk’n’slash movies. There’s something about it. Perhaps my adoration was intensified by the knowledge that a more extreme version existed, but was being denied release, so a level of mystique surrounded the movie. The creepy atmosphere of the movie, especially the numerous scenes set in the mine, and the perverse and twisted aspect of the killer and modus operandi.
Originally released by Paramount, the movie was butchered (quite literally) by the MPAA in order to avoid an X rating. In fact My Blood Valentine received probably the most savage censoring of a horror movie of the entire period. The excised footage remained the property of Paramount and sat gathering dust in their archives. Of course, over the years the movie garnered a cult following (an ultra-cool Brit band even named themselves after it), largely due to gorehound horrorphiles knowing of this existing footage and the vain attempts to convince Paramount to release the movie on DVD in an unrated version.
But Paramount refused, citing their wholesome family viewing purposes (ie no interest in releasing the equivalent of NC-17 movies). Bollocks to that. But somehow Lions Gate have managed to crowbar Paramount into re-releasing the movie on DVD in a Special Edition, complete with all the infamous gore footage edited back in, plus a bonus featurette with cast and crew interviews. Woo hoo!
If you’re at all familiar with the original My Bloody Valentine here’s what was cut out and what the fans are gonna be treated to: hearts being cut out of people's chests, a man with a pick axe struck through his face and out his eye socket, a woman's head impaled on a shower head, a woman baked in an industrial dryer, a man repeatedly shot in the head with a nail gun, a man decapitated, and a man cutting his own arm off.
Of course, part of this plan is to cash in on the release of the 3-D remake which hits big screens in the next week. Whether the remake is any good is another matter entirely, and I’ll let you know next week, but I’ve ordered my DVD from the States, so expect a review of the original version as soon as it arrives (I’m keeping my fingers crossed it gets to me before Saturday February 14th).
Be still my beating bloody heart!!!
