“I don't know how much movies should entertain. To me I'm always interested in movies that scar. The thing I love about Jaws is the fact that I've never gone swimming in the ocean again.” --- David Fincher ::::::::::::: MY CRITERIA FOR DISCUSSION ENCOMPASSES THE HORROR GENRE AND BEYOND, SO I USE THE TERM "NIGHTMARE MOVIES". YOUR FAVOURITE ZOMBIE MOVIES

April 6th 2010 04:25
He’s back! Orble’s prodigal black sheep returns after a month’s hiatus, well holiday actually, but a blog hiatus by default. I hope all my True Believin’ followers missed me. Sometimes it can get lonely in the Dark, I know.

So without further adieu, let me announce the favourite zombie movies as voted by you! There was no competition for Romero’s monochromatic masterpiece, the seminal low-budget shocker that spearheaded the modern horror genre. I’m talking, of course, about Night of the Living Dead (1968), in the top position.
NIght of the Living Dead
I would’ve been very upset indeed if Romero hadn’t had at least one movie in the top five, although I was disappinted my personal favourite zombie flick - and one of my all-time fave horror movies – Romero’s Day of the Dead (1985) only received a couple of votes.

Shaun of the Dead Bill Nighy
In second place is the horror comedy to end all horror comedies: Shaun of the Dead (2004), Edgar Wright and Simon Pegg’s severed-tongue-in-cheek homage to Romero’s zombie universe. Really, has there been a slyer and wittier comedic horror that still delivers the gore goods? Zombieland (2009) tried, but didn’t quite cut the mustard.

Dawn of the Dead 2004
In third place is Zack Snyder’s superb re-envisioning of Romero’s much-loved Dawn of the Dead (2004), a remake that set the standard for horror remakes (of which no one else seems to have taken the baton and run with). Wow, so Romero actually manages to feature, directly and indirectly, in the top three favourites. I’m impressed.

Rounding out the fourth and fifth positions were, not surprisingly, Romero’s original satire Dawn of the Dead (1978), and tied for fifth; the Spanish piece of claustrophobic hysteria [REC] (2007) and the recent excellent UK mini-series (which can be viewed as a segmented movie on DVD), Dead Set (2008).

As for worst zombie movie? Resident Evil’s Apocalypse (2004) and Extinction (2007) and (surprise, surprise) Uwe Boll’s House of the Dead (2003) came out on top, er bottom.

Long live the putrid undead!

Tis a sign of a much loved blogger when you can keep your 5,000 daily readers with a month off! Hope you had a good break Bryn.

Glad to see Shaun of the Dead made it to number two - it's not only my favourite zombie movie, but actually makes it into my top 20 favourite movies of all time. Love it.

Journeywoman,
Yes, I was rather chuffed at the traffic stats upon my return (to be honest I was keeping tabs the whole time), we horrorphiles are a dedicated bunch of freaks!

Master, yes, you and I have already chewed considerable fat over Zombieland already, if I remember correctly ... We all have our own palate for fromage, mine probably lies with Night of the Creeps

I recently came across a trailer for Zombie Strippers. Yikes! Maybe its too far down the list to rate a mention.
Really Long Link

Lovetrucker,
Zombie Strippers did get a couple of nods. I haven't seen it myself, but with Jenna Jameson as a zombie hardbody, it would probably be a cheap laugh that might be digestible with cold pizza and warm beer.

2. Dawn of the Dead (2004)
3. Night of the Living Dead
4. Shaun of the Dead
5. 28 Weeks Later

Dead Set comes close, as does Fulci's The Beyond.
