What's your VAMPIRE NAME?

August 10th 2007 00:19
Vampire illustration by George Patsouras
I was searching through my “favourites” list and came across a curious link. I can’t remember who sent it to me, but the word “vampire” re-piqued my interest, so I opened it up and explored a little further.

It’s a homepage belonging to a 31-year-old English writer called Emma Davies who lives in a cottage in Derbyshire and hopes to be a successful writer one day. In the meantime she is a computer programmer by day and a poet and short story writer by night.

She appears to be pre-occupied with fairies and alternative nutrition, an odd mix, but then, from her own words she doesn’t come across as your typical wallflower either; “I'm an atheist. I'm not even slightly mystical. Sorry: I don't believe in fairies. I'm a scientist at heart. I'm very left-wing but too cynical to believe in the Marxist dream anymore. Power corrupts. There are too many stupid people in the world. I don't believe most of what I hear in the news, or at least not the slant it's given by naive journalists. I am a feminist of sorts and I believe wholeheartedly in sexual liberation of all kinds. I like goths, skaters, hippies and alternative types. I have a fascination with witches. I am not a goth. I don't subscribe to any particular social group, as I like dressing up too much.”

She's smart and witty and some of her poetry is quite good, but I haven’t read any of her short stories. She sells fairy dolls on behalf of a friend and maintains a nutrition blog, as well as her own fairy and fantasy creative ramblings.

vampire fangs
But let’s cut to the chase; vampires. On her homepage is a link through to a Vampire Name Generator (this is the link I was initially sent), where you enter in your first and last name, hit the Find My Vampire Name button and before you can say “Nosferatu”, the Great Archives has created a name, including an additional description of what you are known as in other parts of the world, and what the Great Archives lists you as in their Records.

I am Michael Saint Clair, known in some parts of the world as Bacchus of Slaves in Chains, and described as “Silently this one moves amongst the helpless and the oppressed.”

I dig it. It glides and bites with a kind of Anne Rice elegance.

Apparently the Vampire Name Generator is designed to be used for gothic role playing games like White Wolf’s Vampire: The Requiem and Vampire: The Masquerade and also the Buffy the Vampire Slayer RPG. Gee, I haven’t indulged in role-playing since I was a teenager with the odd game of Dungeons & Dragons. There is also a Goth Name Generator on the same page. And, of course, a Fairy Name Generator too, for those inclined.

I wonder if anyone has come up with a Werewolf Name Generator or a Demon Name Generator? I’d certainly like to know mine.

Hanzi Burns
Known in some parts of the world as:

Hierophant of The Steely Moon
The Great Archives Record:

A child of the Moon Goddess - Cold, determined, but of the light in the night.

Hmmm.. not sure about Hanzi Burns. I had to look up Hierophant:

1 : a priest in ancient Greece; specifically : the chief priest of the Eleusinian mysteries
2 a : EXPOSITOR b : ADVOCATE 2

So I guess I'm a priest of the Steely Moon

The Great Archives determine you to have gone by the identity: Rosalind du Coudray

It'll do. Although despite the trappings of being said vampyre, I'd prefer to evade the "never dying" mantle. But perhaps that's just me. So says the non-eternal undead.

How on earth do these name generators actually work? Perhaps knowing that "secret" will destroy the mystique ...

At least being pastey, well versed in literature, morose, overtly sexual and uptight about my clothing, the vampiric name won't suggest I'm gay!

Michael (St Clair),

It's Ahab here. Ahab Fey. Remember? We met at your dinner party.

Has an Incubus got more power than a Duchess in the Underworld? I'm a bit worried about running into The Bitch of Blood down here.

And, I've seen enough episodes of Buffy to know there's some kick-arse women out there.

Comment by Bryn

November 8th 2008 02:52
I loved the novel of Interview with the Vampire, and even more so The Vampire Lestat. I did not like the movie adaptation at all. I thought Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt's casting was very ill-conceived. Originally Anne Rice wanted Rutger Hauer as Lestat and Eric Roberts as Louis, which would've been brilliant! But that was back in the mid-80s when it came close to being made.
My fave vampire movies are
Nosferatu (1922), German Expressionist b&w silent movie, very creepy, loosely-based on the Dracula novel
The Addiction (1994), b&w, very stylised take on an underground NYC sub-culture starring Christopher Walken as the head of a large vampire clan directed by Abel Ferrara
Vampire's Kiss (1989) pitch-black comedy about a NYC suit played by Nic Cage (in brilliantly mannered form) who thinks he's turning into a vampire after being bitten by a sexy vamp played by Jennifer Beals.
Near Dark (1987) young man gets bitten by cute girl and is taken into the clutches of a group of nomadic vampires, great stuff from director Kathryn Bigelow
30 Days of Night (2007), ferocious animalistic vampires attack an Alaskan town during the annual month of complete darkness ... my dad acted in this and plays the first victim.
Check these out if you haven't already seen them!

Comment by x_Scarlet_x

November 10th 2008 18:50
I agree on that the novels that anne rice wrote are way better yes, I very much enjoyed reading them :]
but the movie still belongs in my fav. list too

but sadly I haven't seen many movies about vampires though, nor many other movies
and I didn't see the other movies you mentioned yet, so I surely will watch them sometime

Comment by Bryn

November 11th 2008 22:04
scarlet ... another vampire movie you have to see when it gets a wide release is a Swedish flick called Let the Right One In, about a young boy and girl who become friends. She's a vamp trapped in a 12-year-old's body. It is the best vampire movie I've seen in years! Atmospheric, chilling, intelligent, provocative, and totally unique. I saw it the Sydney Film Festival earlier in the year and it rocked my world, best movie of the festival.

Hey Mr.Saint Clair, I can't believe after all this time, I hadn't popped in to find out my vampire name! Here it is:

The Great Archives determine you to have gone by the identity:
High Priestess of The Great Oceans
Known in some parts of the world as:
Devil of Raven's Wings
The Great Archives Record:
A dark one, ancient, who flies free above all others.

I like it. Seems fitting. However, can one be the High Priestess of the Oceans if they've never actually been to the ocean???

Anyway, I love this...A dark one, ancient, who flies free above all others

That's me!
