The Faculty
April 23rd 2008 02:57
I can’t believe it’s been ten years already since Robert Rodriguez’s nifty little sci-fi/horror gem! The Faculty (1998) was great fun the first time round, and it’s still a lot of schlocky fun now. I bet Tarantino wouldn’t be able to make a horror as inventive and genuinely tense as The Faculty, even now. In fact for the Grindhouse experience he opted for the chicks with dicks/muscle car option, leaving Rodriguez to pull out all the horror stops, but that’s another kettle of blood’n’pus, and I’ll be reviewing Planet Terror in full in the very near future.
Written by Kevin Williamson, who also penned the annoying Scream (1996) and the lame duck I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Faculty is deeply derivative, but wears its influences and inspirations shamelessly on its school uniform sleeve, but it works, oh yes, it works!
The most obvious links are Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1955) and The Puppet Masters. But John Carpenter’s The Thing (1982) rears its head from time to time. Williamson’s funny, referential dialague and Rodriguez’s visual style work excellently together. Even better is the exceptional cast, a vertible who’s who of established character actors and, at the time, up-and-coming hot new blood; Piper Laurie, Robert Patrick, Bebe Neuwirth, Famke Janssen, Salma Hayek, Christopher McDonald, Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett, Clea DuVall, Usher (the R&B star) Raymond, and comedian Jon Stewart (way before he was a big television star).
Other leads Shawn Hatosy, Laura Harris and Jordana Brewster have been relatively busy since, but never reached the heights the other actors have (photogenic Jordana should’ve had an easy ride, but the only other movie of merit she’s made is The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning 2006, which isn’t half as bad as critics and audiences slammed it as).
Dumb-savvy students at Herrington High, Ohio, slowly realise that alien parasites are taking over the school, starting with the teaching faculty, moving through the students, and onward through the township. It’s up to Zeke (Hartnett) and his homemade, bargain basement scat (caffeine sold as speed) and the quick-wits of fellow teenagers Casey (Wood) and Stokely (DuVall) to try and save the day before the alien invasion takes over the whole country and beyond.
There’s much to enjoy in The Faculty, director Rodriguez milks as much as he can for a studio-bound picture (apparently he owed a profit-guaranteed genre flick to Miramax bigwigs the Weinsteins who of course released it through their highly successful Dimension Films subsidiary). The special effects were handled by Greg Nicotero, Howard Berger and Robert Kurtzmann before they become known officially as KNB EFX Group, and there’s some excellent work, combining CGI with classic prosthetics. For an Australian M-rated movie there’s some juicy money-shots.
The acting is mostly solid, but stand-outs performances are mostly the adults; Robert Patrick as aggressive Coach Willis, Famke Janssen as mousey Miss Burke, and Bebe Neuwirth as Principal Drake, all obviously enjoying the roles. The teens are charismatic with Elijah Wood, Josh Hartnett and Clea DuVall holding fort.
The alien queen is a riot, but I won’t spoil the surprise if you haven’t seen the movie, it’s a cool carpet-puller, and works excellently. Indeed the scenes in the movie’s last quarter in the gymnasium and swimming pool are terrific. But the movie is a hoot from start to finish! Swiftly-paced and rewarding.
The Faculty should definitely receive some kind of special edition treatment; it’s the tenth anniversary fer Chrissake! How about a Rodriguez & Williamson commentary? Key cast commentary? A special effects featurette? Deleted scenes (a key student character called Venus ended up on the cutting room floor)? Goof reel? C’mon, there must have been a goof reel on a movie this much schlocky fun …?! Tentacled fingers crossed, here's hoping ...
Here's the theatrical trailer:
Here's Miss Burke a changed woman (excuse the Eastern Euro subs and it ain't work safe):
Here's when science teacher Prof. Furlong gets involved (warning! contains spoilers/not work safe either):

Film & TV on DVD
Derivative for sure, but well handled and fast moving there is much to smile about. Then again like you I'm a massive fan of the films its saluting.... One of the few Josh Hartnett films (along with Virgin Suicides) that allows him to shine instead of drag the movie down.
its been a while since Ive seen it, time for a screening I think, maybe pop some speed pills to add to the ride.

For the Sake of Argument
My Apologetics
I saw this film on the shelf and I saw Decoys.
Yes I selected decoys and regretted it ever since.
It was billed as watch this if you liked the Faculty.
Hence I was put off watching The Faculty because of it.
Maybe I should check this out and compare.

Morgan, really? You think Scream was well-written?? It irritated the hell out of me, but then to be honest I'm not a fan of horror comedy per se. Especially when it tries to be too clever, and especially when the majority of the cast annoy the pants off of me! Here's my review of Scream, if you're at all interested.
Raven,
you too? fragmented? Oh well, that's the beauty of film, it's like all art, each individual person can pull it apart saying it worked or it didn't work ...
