THE ART LAIR - X ~ Succubi ~ Dark Angels
May 22nd 2009 01:17
It’s been eight months since the last Art Lair post. But out of the wilderness I present a triple-whammy for the tenth exhibition: three posts all on the same subject: the succubus, or succubi (plural), one of my favourite mythological figures.
The succubus is a female demon. The male counterpart is known as an incubus. European Medieval folklore describes the succubus as a demon in the form of a beautiful woman who seduces men in their dreams, having sexual intercourse and drawing the man’s energy for their own power, often to the point where he becomes utterly exhausted, sometimes dying.
Jewish legend has it that succubi originated from the mother of all demons, Lilith, who was coupled with Adam in the Garden of Eden before Eve. Lilith was an assertive woman. When it came for the act of procreation and Adam initiated the missionary position Lilith challenged him, saying “I will not lie below”. She insisted that they lie side by side as equals, but Adam refused. Lilith became so incensed that she stormed out of Eden in a fiery rage cursing Mankind and declaring her diabolical intent: she would have sexual intercourse with all fallen angels and give birth to a race of demons known as succubi and incubi.
I have separated the images I’ve collected into three groups, each its own post; Dark Angels, Sexy Beasts, and Salacious Demons, the artwork speaks for itself. It seems succubi provide much inspiration to artists. I found many of them from a superb site called A Succubi’s Tail, others I found on flickr and via google.
