SIX TRAILERS to get your teeth stuck into!
December 4th 2008 01:47
The silly season is officially upon us. I love this month; partly because it’s my birthday in a couple of weeks, but also ‘tis the season to be merry, and I love merriment. Horror and merriment go severed hand in severed hand.
So to celebrate the good stuff here are six pretty narly trailers to movies being released overseas in January and February next year, expect them down under not too long after. We’ve got a prequel and two remakes, a directing debut from respected screenwriter David Goyer, a Japanese director making a Clive Barker story in Hollywood, and an Oscar-nominated newbie adding his own stylistic touch to the horror-thriller genre.
First up is Underworld: Rise of the Lycans which takes us back before the first two Underworld movies and tells a much darker, more Gothic tale with the sumptuous Rhone Mitra and Bill Nighy heading the cast (Kate Beckinsale’s character is not feature). It is directed by special effects whiz Patrick Tatopoulos.
Next are two remakes of two of the most infamous slasher movies; Friday the 13th is directed by Marcus Nispel who made the much-maligned remake of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003). This re-envisioning makes a couple of significant changes from the original (Jason is the killer from the get-go and he wears a hockey mask from the get-go).
My Blood Valentine 3-D is directed by Patrick Lussier, an editor who has taken the directing reigns. How closely they stick to the Canadian original is anyone’s guess, but Jaime King co-stars, so expect deep trash appeal.
The Unborn's writer/director David S. Goyer was the screenwriter for the Blade movies, and co-scripted Batman Begins and The Dark Knight. Michael Bay is producing and uber-babe Odette Justman is the lead. The trailer looks awesome, but that can sometimes suggest bad things for the movie itself.
Clive Barker’s short story The Midnight Meat Train is being directed by Ryûhei Kitamura who made the cult fave assassin flick Azumi. This received poor distribution in America, so that doesn’t spell good things for a theatrical release in Australasia, despite the movie’s high production values and a cast including Brooke Shields and Tony Curran.
Finally the brilliant looking French/English co-production The Broken starring Lena Headley, which I first posted about months and months ago, and have been anticipating a release down under for some time. It played the European festival circuit early this year and it receives a UK theatrical release in January. The movie is directed by Sean Ellis who was nominated for an Oscar for his short film Cashback (which he then remade into a feature).
Here are two teaser trailers and a third extended clip which spells dark, dark things indeed:

The Broken looks very creepy as well, though you couldn't pay me enough to watch the third Underworld film, the first two were deplorable. The worst thing about them was how seriously they took themselves - so much so that they were laughable - for all the wrong reasons!! Yes Rhona Mitra is very nice to behold! And she was the only positive out of Doomsday but as the unsmiling anti-hero you get the feeling she's a bit of a Kate Beckinsale clone anyway.

I had a friend trying to convince me that Doomsday was intended as a comedy. But I couldn't accept that.
I love werewolves, so I'm always game. Rhona was in another dreadful lycan movie called Skinwalkers. Shame cos the poster rocked! I'm hoping someone like Scorsese casts her in a role that demands she get her gear off. I'm such a dirty pervert.

This will definitely be the one I'll be looking the most forward to. Thanks for the head's up.

yeah, I appreciated the references in The Unborn too. Have you seen Quarantine yet?
And, word on the street is that the original My Bloody Valentine will be released on DVD in a special edition with all the infamous gore effects edited back in!!! YES!!! I'm very excited!
