Stop Press! GEORGE A. ROMERO back in the ZOMBIE saddle!

October 28th 2008 05:37
zombieeeeeeeee!
Here's something to get excited about! George Romero began shooting a new zombie flick at the beginning of the month in Ontario. It’s an independent production with a cast of mostly unknowns; although several of the actors have Saw III (2006), IV (2007) and/or V (2008) on their resume, which gives me great concern for the calibre of acting.

The screenplay is by Romero; the plot involves inhabitants of an isolated island off the North American coast who find their relatives rising from the dead to eat their kin. The leaders of the island feud over whether or not to kill their reanimated relatives or preserve them in hopes of finding a cure to the zombie plague.

I'm strangely reminded of two Stephen King short stories, both of which featured in his anthology Skeleton Crew; The Reach (originally published as Do the Dead Sing?), a ghost story about a lonely woman on an island desperate to be reunited with her long-deceased husband, and Survivor Type - one of my very favourite King short stories - about a skilled surgeon (and drug smuggler) marooned on an island who finally resorts to using his stash of heroin as an anesthetic so he can cut off and eat parts of himself in order to survive.

Like the other four sequels in Romero’s Dead series, this new movie is a sequel in name, but not with returning characters. Either way, it’s bound to get called Island of the Dead, which means I’m still waiting for the inevitable Dusk of the Dead … or Twilight of the Dead (I can’t decide which of those two titles sounds irreparably tragic i.e. a romantic drama steeped in morbid melancholy).

Let’s hope Romero goes for broke, the die-hard fans are champing at the bit for it! It would be great if KNB would do the special effects make-up! Hold back on the CGI George!!

why actors from the Saw movies?

anyway, it sounds interesting, and I hope Romero pulls it off.

And "Twilight of the Dead" would be incredible, if done right!

Cibby, yeah, who knows ... perhaps they come real cheap ...?? I'm hoping when he does Twilight (or Dusk) he goes back to the original concept for Day of the Dead, which was the military using a trained "Green Beret" group of zombies to battle the rest, in a last ditch effort to eradicate the problem.
