“A horror film’s job is to scare you, is to get your pulse going, is to make you scream and yell. It’s to make you be afraid. That’s its main purpose, and creeping you out. And that can be an enjoyable experience.” --- John Carpenter ::::::::::::: MY CRITERIA FOR DISCUSSION ENCOMPASSES THE HORROR GENRE AND BEYOND, SO I USE THE TERM "NIGHTMARE MOVIES". Horror QUIZ #28: That sounds like a movie I know!

October 12th 2009 00:45
Know your Lucio Fulci well?

If you’re a screenwriter, or a real cinephile, you’ll know the term “logline”; the plot description or synopsis of a movie in usually twenty-five words or less. It’s usually written in a way as to lure the viewer (or to be more precise, a prospective producer), so it needs to be very straightforward, yet concise and dramatic.

I’ve concocted my own loglines for you to work out the movie I’m describing. Hopefully I’ve done my job well enough that you don’t’ end up with several movies that all fit the same bill, but when you’re reducing a synopsis down to a single short sentence it can be tricky not sounding like half a dozen other movies. I must be honest, these are teasers really; more brief than your standard logline, but to be fair, a few are really quite easy.

1. A cop finds himself in a relationship with a highly selective vampire.

2. A curious brother and sister end up on the menu of a ritualistic winged demon.

3. The uncle of a victim seeks vengeance against a murderous family living underground.

4. The crew of a freight ship tries to survive a ferocious castaway.

5. Several men are visited by the vengeful ghost of a woman who bewitched them all decades earlier.

6. A doctor and his girlfriend try to escape the clutches of an emotionless town.

7. A mother seeks retribution over the supposed death of her deformed son.

8. A robot and its programmer run amok on a botanical station.

9. A woman inherits a hotel only to find it’s built over one of the entrances to hell.

10. A social worker visits a house cursed by the malevolent ghost of a murdered mother and son.

11. A man caught in a limbo state is plagued by terrifying visions of disfigured demons.

12. A group of young urban socialites try to survive the onslaught of a monstrous beast.

13. A nervous diva is terrorised by a deranged, unseen psychopath who kills all her colleagues.

13 … Brilliant! The Scarlet Severed Hand trophy for you!
9 – 12 … Well, well, well, very impressive, you know your horror schtick!
5 – 8 … You’ve spent some time in the Dark, good work, but no bloodied cigar for you!
1 – 4 … Best you stick to watching the daytime soaps.

Great quiz man,

I checked the answers and I got 3 wrong.

I couldn't get number 8, (Was totally on the wrong track with my thinking). I got 9 & 10 wrong, which is annoying because I dig both) The synopisis'/question seemed to have been used in variations in many horror films. But once i saw the answer it was a "doh" moment.

#8 could also refer to Silent Running (even though it isn't a horror movie).

Jack, cheers, I did think of that, although firstly, yes, Silent Running isn't a horror movie, and secondly, Bruce Dern had several of his robots running around with him with him rather than just the one ...

Yeah, it was 'robot' vs 'robots' that convinced me it wasn't Silent Running. Haven't really heard much about Saturn 3, let alone seen it. If it's in the same vein as 80s action sci-fi flicks like Outlander, maybe I should give it a look though.

Jack, Saturn 3 is definitely flawed, with equally dodgy and cool effects, but a great curio and it has some great elements. I wish a special edition DVD was released. It had a troubled production and there are deleted scenes that I know of. If you're a sf/horror fan then you should check it out. Harvey Keitel is good, Farrah is Farrah, and Kirk Douglas is, well, Kirk. Hector the robot steals the show.
