POSTER GALLERY 4
August 20th 2007 23:55
Another monthly cycle has come full circle; it’s time to unleash another thirteen movie posters which represent what I love about the horror genre, graphic design and the imaginative interplay between words and imagery.
I feature predominantly posters from the scarlet age of horror (70s and 80s), but I like to throw a few modern posters into the witches' cauldron for have a little context. On the whole the retro posters always seem to command so much more chutzpah than the contemporary ones. I guess I’m old fashioned at (dark) heart.
It’s not to say there aren’t any good posters currently being produced; certainly the last three are very striking in their simplicity (partly because they're teaser posters, which means there is less text used, but hey ...)
Looking at some of these great posters again I realise there are several I need to review in the very near future … I even worked as a production assistant on one of them (Braindead) and my father has acted in another (30 Days of Night)!

yeah, i'd forgotten all about that early braindead artwork ... back when it was still spelt brain dead, I was the one who suggested to peter jackson to combine the two words as one
i like the black snake moan artwork, very sexploitation!

Cool posters - I'm with you - I prefer the minimalist approach.

I also am a huge fan of the old style posters, I really liked the era where they were paintings/poster art, modern photography can be great, as you also show here, but it falls short of that 'arty' feel....maybe I'm just a nostalgia freak trying to live in the past...
Anyhoo, I worked on a few films too, the last Mad Max movie, its poster was artistically rendered, not great, but ok.
I loved the old Jap Sci Fi ones, and UFO numbers from the 50's and 60's....but I am old and ready for the scrap heap....sigh...going now...
cheers

So dark hearts run the family I see..... I really love the old school posters. Less is more in a movie poster I say. Being teased is always better foreplay for a fabulous wild ride of a horror movie.

Chic, yeah it is cool, even though it stole the visual concept from Jaws, which again has been stolen by Greg (Wolf Creek) McLean's new flick Rogue ...
Fog, personally I love the apocalyptic-styled poster artwork for the first Mad Max film, which I actually have on a t-shirt, the illustration showing a masked Max in leather with pistol and a road accident in the background. Very cool.
Damo, che che! Inferno is probably my fave of the gallery too ... I'd kill for the poster and wanna get that on a t-shirt too!
Mis, yes, suggestion speaks volumes indeed.

I liked them all, although, I think Inferno is my personal favorite from your group!
Take care,
