POSTER GALLERY 13

August 12th 2008 23:11
Martin (1977)
Lucky thirteen! It’s somewhat pertinent that this month’s poster gallery is #13, since today is the 13th and tomorrow is Horrorphile’s 2nd birthday. And as you know when making lists 13 is my Horrorphile rule of (severed) thumb.

I’ve bannered the post with George Romero’s take on the vampire genre, since he was visiting Australia in the last month as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. I didn’t get to meet him (I shed a tear or two), but I tip my hat to the man, he’s in the directors’ pantheon of modern horror.

So without further adieu, and in-keeping with Romero’s low-budget origins, here are thirteen more classic B-movies ripe as they’ll ever be! Including Francis Ford Coppola’s first real feature directed in 1963 for producer Roger Corman and presented here under its alternate title. Do you know which one?

I Walked With a Zombie (1943)

The Blob (1958)

Black Sunday (1960)

The Haunted and the Hunted aka Dementia 13 (1963)

Cry of the Banshee (1970)

Torso (1973)

Horror High (1974)

Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (1974)

Eyeball (1975)

Bug (1975)

The Psychic (1977)

Toxic Zombies aka Bloodeaters (1980)

Crocodile (1981)

wow - I've never even heard of these movies... recommend any? I'm interested in "Martin"! What's up with that?

Cibby, I can recommend I Walk with a Zombie, The Blob stars Steve McQueen, Black Sunday is by Italian legend Mario Bava, Haunted and the Hunted is by Coppola, Torso I reviewed, Frankenstein and the Monster from Hell (love that poster) is a Hammer movie, and Martin is a left-field vampire movie from '77 about a creepy young man with a thirst and a hyperdermic.
I haven't seen any of the others ...

The Haunted and the Hunted!! Guess how I guessed....

Martin, what a classic! Also Tom Savini's first real film gig.

I love cheesy old horror film posters--and comic book covers too. My very first real drawing was from a story I read in "Tales from the Crypt" comic way way back....about being trapped in the catacombs under Rome. Awesome stuff.

Today is Horrorphile's birthday in the U.S.--Happy Birthday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!

Armenta, cheers! *chink*
Well, the original title is included in the poster of course
If I'm correct Savini's first feature was for Deranged (1974) ...
