“Night brings terror. Strange, alien forms move restlessly across the face of the earth. Fear, horror and death follow in their wake. The sky is dark; the moon has not yet risen; the stars seem too frightened to shine ..." --- Drake Douglas (introduction to Horrors)

Bit of a mixed bag this post. Yes, I’ll admit there are some ripe ones, including a poster to my very first Pleasure of Nightmares movie review which I thought was very disappointing. The poster’s good though: Silent Hill

Another dreadful movie is the remake of Day of the Dead. The poster’s quite good though. My tongue is lodged in my cheek though; Silent Night, Deadly Night. And I’m speaking in a foreign tongue too; Lo Squartatore Di New York (Lucio Fulci’s nasty New York Ripper).

There’s rare blood on display too; the original poster design for John Carpenter’s The Thing. There’s a couple of unknowns; In My Sleep and Bad Biology, and a dark gem from the silent era; Haxan (a doco about witchcraft).

Death Wish, The Thing, and Silent Night, Deadly Night are currently being remade. I wouldn’t be surprised if Blow Out gets done over some time soon. Okay, so Blow Out's a thriller, but it’s a nightmare psycho-thriller, and De Palma has a fake horror movie play at the start!

Yes, like I said, it’s very much a mixed bag, but hopefully a few bones everyone can chew on.

Here’s a splash of old with a soaking of the new; from Cronenberg’s tale of maternal rage to one of the many early 80s slasher remakes that are beginning to emerge and will continue to do so over the next couple of years. Still, the art work rocks, so I’m cool with it.

The Brood (1979)

Blood Beach (1981)

The Thing (Spanish poster) (1982)

Demoni (Demons) (1985)

Il Cartaio (The Card Player) (2004)

Shrooms (2006)

The Strangers (2007)

Red Swastik (2007)

Planet Terror (2007)

The Eye (2008)

The Ruins (2008)

I’m going old school this time around. I’ve selected only Golden Age classics, with a hint of fromage. From a time when illustration was paramount, vivid colour was king, and bold typeset was de rigueur.

I love the old art deco style graphic designs, there’s something undeniably creepy about them. But enough from me, bring on the glamour horror

The Brain Eaters
Nearly missed my monthly post on horror movie posters! Sheeesh, can’t have that. Especially since Cibbuano, Orble’s veteran movie critic, plugged last month’s poster post so wonderfully. Thanks Cibby!

So here they are in their fabulous grotesque glory, thirteen (horrorphile’s list rule of thumb) movie posters for past, present and very-near-future releases. I tend to gravitate toward the retro styling, simply because they look more interesting than so many of the contemporary ones

I’m feeling in a trashy, exploitative mood today. So my movie poster selection is reflecting this. Not all the way to the hilt, but some of the way. I’m plunging deep, but I’m not getting the gloves covered in gore.

I’ve included aliens and zombies, vampires and werewolves, monsters and robots, ultra-violent gangs, homicidal sex-fiends and witchcraft … something for everyone. But of course, they’re not high brow, well, there might be a couple of middle brow movies in there. Or even middle brow that is lying in the gutter staring up at the stars

It’s exhibition time again: thirteen examples of cool, stylish, trashy, enigmatic, outlandish, and altogether striking poster art exhibiting a horror movie. More often than not it’s the graphic design and artwork that I’m putting the spotlight on, than the actual movie itself. But I’ve seen all but two of these movies below, and there’s only two or three whose poster outshines the movie by a long shot.

My Poster Galleries are ultimately about the celebration of the artwork

Another monthly cycle has come full circle; it’s time to unleash another thirteen movie posters which represent what I love about the horror genre, graphic design and the imaginative interplay between words and imagery.

I feature predominantly posters from the scarlet age of horror (70s and 80s), but I like to throw a few modern posters into the witches' cauldron for have a little context. On the whole the retro posters always seem to command so much more chutzpah than the contemporary ones. I guess I’m old fashioned at (dark) heart

It’s that time of month again, where I select thirteen movie posters that tickle my dark fancy; artwork that features striking and imaginative, sometimes unconventional, use of graphics, imagery, layout, thematic content. I very much admire cinematic iconography that is vivid and memorable, sometimes with a subversive intent lurking beyond a glossy façade.

I haven’t actually seen a couple of these, but I like the poster art, regardless of whether the film is any good. But you probably know me by now, I love to mix my high art with my deep trash, and I separate my motion picture aesthetics from my graphic design aesthetics

Movie poster art is a very cool thing. I used to collect them when I was a student, but over the years, moving out of home and into my first shared-accommodation, then into another flat, then into an apartment block, back to a house, then the move overseas, many of the posters have inexplicably vanished from my possession.

I had some particularly stylish original 1970s editions that I bought at a local cinema sale. The owners (who had sold the business) filled the auditorium with these original posters, all lying spread out over the seats and in boxes in the aisles. All the hard core collectors were there. It was a shit fight. I scored some gems though; giant posters of Jaws (1975) and Dressed to Kill (1980), and I remember the glee of securing a Suspiria (1977) poster, before I’d even seen the movie, but knowing I’d struck dark gold

I’m a huge fan of stylish and imaginative graphic art; the clever use of imagery taken from the movie (or in some cases shot specifically for the poster) and manipulated into something striking, even different, the inventive use of lettering and fonts, and not forgetting the indelible tagline.

Here is the first selection of movie posters (in an ongoing gallery series) that for me conjure up the high art or deep trash essence of the movie itself, or in some way capture a potent element of terror or horror, otherwise missing or less obvious in the actual movie
