“A horror film’s job is to scare you, is to get your pulse going, is to make you scream and yell. It’s to make you be afraid. That’s its main purpose, and creeping you out. And that can be an enjoyable experience.” --- John Carpenter ::::::::::::: MY CRITERIA FOR DISCUSSION ENCOMPASSES THE HORROR GENRE AND BEYOND, SO I USE THE TERM "NIGHTMARE MOVIES". ZOMBIE WARS

December 15th 2009 01:28
My good mate, Captain, over at the Sci-Fi Channel gave me the (severed) heads up on a post he’d done featuring the artwork of Matt Busch. In a hilarious zombification of the seminal George Lucas saga the original poster art for all six movies have been given the undead makeover and a suitably putrid title adjustment.

Seems all you need to do is peel back the gums, flash a little a bone, glaze over the eyes, and wahey! Zombie Star Wars! I always thought Mark Hamill and Ewan McGregor were wooden actors, in these re-envisionings their performances will be utterly inspired!

Goodness gracias me, it’s been way too long! Nine months in fact! Long enough to have a damn baby! IT’S ALIVE!!!

So to kick the Horrorphile gallery exhibitions back off with a bit of contemporary va-va-voom, I thought I’d put some current releases in the limelight (I like that word, “limelight”, reminds me of what one throws on dead bodies to stop them from rotting …) So here are a selection of flicks that have either just been released overseas or will be in coming months (and a few that are still in production, such as Cannibals and Let Me In). I can’t vouch for any of these movie’s calibre since I haven’t seen any of them of course, but I have strong hopes for many, and I certainly don’t mind the artwork (actually I'll be honest, the Hissss poster is not that great, but I'm so excited about the movie!)

Still, none of them possess the same visual je ne sais quoi that the posters of old exude. I’ll always be a fan of the poster designs from the 70s and 80s, so for the next exhibition I’ll no doubt retreat back into the retro shadows once again, where you often find me lurking.

If anyone’s seen any of these and would like to give me a heads up by all means, drop a comment via the blog! I’d love to hear from you! It gets lonely in the Dark sometimes. Heh, heh …

The Dark Knight teaser poster 2008
Yes, it’s been a long while. Several months in fact, since my last Poster Gallery posting, which was meant to be a monthly endeavour, but you know how these things are, sometimes you can’t find the material for a while, and then the next thing you know, time has slipped away on you like plastic soles skidding in a pool of congealing blood …

So here is a selection that mixes the high art with the deep trash, which is one of my fetishes, as you know. A couple of the movies represented in this selection I wouldn’t touch with a sharpened barge pole, as they are utterly dreadful, but the poster design rocks.

A few foreign dark delights, including two outlandish Polish designs, since they turn everything on its minimal head when it comes to movie poster graphic art and are almost always in monochrome ... and one that has caused great concern to a certain famous fast food chain.

As a nod to the criminally insane made good; an early teaser poster to The Dark Knight I’ve thrown in for good opening measure. Apologies the Horrorphile Poster Gallery has been out of action for so long, I was too busy killing people and making post-modern art installations with their body parts to notice the walls were bare …

Lucky thirteen! It’s somewhat pertinent that this month’s poster gallery is #13, since today is the 13th and tomorrow is Horrorphile’s 2nd birthday. And as you know when making lists 13 is my Horrorphile rule of (severed) thumb.

I’ve bannered the post with George Romero’s take on the vampire genre, since he was visiting Australia in the last month as part of the Melbourne International Film Festival. I didn’t get to meet him (I shed a tear or two), but I tip my hat to the man, he’s in the directors’ pantheon of modern horror

Bit of a mixed bag this post. Yes, I’ll admit there are some ripe ones, including a poster to my very first Pleasure of Nightmares movie review which I thought was very disappointing. The poster’s good though: Silent Hill

Another dreadful movie is the remake of Day of the Dead. The poster’s quite good though. My tongue is lodged in my cheek though; Silent Night, Deadly Night. And I’m speaking in a foreign tongue too; Lo Squartatore Di New York (Lucio Fulci’s nasty New York Ripper

Here’s a splash of old with a soaking of the new; from Cronenberg’s tale of maternal rage to one of the many early 80s slasher remakes that are beginning to emerge and will continue to do so over the next couple of years. Still, the art work rocks, so I’m cool with it.

I’m going old school this time around. I’ve selected only Golden Age classics, with a hint of fromage. From a time when illustration was paramount, vivid colour was king, and bold typeset was de rigueur.

I love the old art deco style graphic designs, there’s something undeniably creepy about them. But enough from me, bring on the glamour horror

Nearly missed my monthly post on horror movie posters! Sheeesh, can’t have that. Especially since Cibbuano, Orble’s veteran movie critic, plugged last month’s poster post so wonderfully. Thanks Cibby!

So here they are in their fabulous grotesque glory, thirteen (horrorphile’s list rule of thumb) movie posters for past, present and very-near-future releases. I tend to gravitate toward the retro styling, simply because they look more interesting than so many of the contemporary ones

I’m feeling in a trashy, exploitative mood today. So my movie poster selection is reflecting this. Not all the way to the hilt, but some of the way. I’m plunging deep, but I’m not getting the gloves covered in gore.

I’ve included aliens and zombies, vampires and werewolves, monsters and robots, ultra-violent gangs, homicidal sex-fiends and witchcraft … something for everyone. But of course, they’re not high brow, well, there might be a couple of middle brow movies in there. Or even middle brow that is lying in the gutter staring up at the stars

It’s exhibition time again: thirteen examples of cool, stylish, trashy, enigmatic, outlandish, and altogether striking poster art exhibiting a horror movie. More often than not it’s the graphic design and artwork that I’m putting the spotlight on, than the actual movie itself. But I’ve seen all but two of these movies below, and there’s only two or three whose poster outshines the movie by a long shot.

My Poster Galleries are ultimately about the celebration of the artwork

Another monthly cycle has come full circle; it’s time to unleash another thirteen movie posters which represent what I love about the horror genre, graphic design and the imaginative interplay between words and imagery.

I feature predominantly posters from the scarlet age of horror (70s and 80s), but I like to throw a few modern posters into the witches' cauldron for have a little context. On the whole the retro posters always seem to command so much more chutzpah than the contemporary ones. I guess I’m old fashioned at (dark) heart

It’s that time of month again, where I select thirteen movie posters that tickle my dark fancy; artwork that features striking and imaginative, sometimes unconventional, use of graphics, imagery, layout, thematic content. I very much admire cinematic iconography that is vivid and memorable, sometimes with a subversive intent lurking beyond a glossy façade.

I haven’t actually seen a couple of these, but I like the poster art, regardless of whether the film is any good. But you probably know me by now, I love to mix my high art with my deep trash, and I separate my motion picture aesthetics from my graphic design aesthetics

Movie poster art is a very cool thing. I used to collect them when I was a student, but over the years, moving out of home and into my first shared-accommodation, then into another flat, then into an apartment block, back to a house, then the move overseas, many of the posters have inexplicably vanished from my possession.

I had some particularly stylish original 1970s editions that I bought at a local cinema sale. The owners (who had sold the business) filled the auditorium with these original posters, all lying spread out over the seats and in boxes in the aisles. All the hard core collectors were there. It was a shit fight. I scored some gems though; giant posters of Jaws (1975) and Dressed to Kill (1980), and I remember the glee of securing a Suspiria (1977) poster, before I’d even seen the movie, but knowing I’d struck dark gold

I’m a huge fan of stylish and imaginative graphic art; the clever use of imagery taken from the movie (or in some cases shot specifically for the poster) and manipulated into something striking, even different, the inventive use of lettering and fonts, and not forgetting the indelible tagline.

Here is the first selection of movie posters (in an ongoing gallery series) that for me conjure up the high art or deep trash essence of the movie itself, or in some way capture a potent element of terror or horror, otherwise missing or less obvious in the actual movie
