Horrorphile’s 2nd birthday presents MY NIGHTMARE MOVIE ARCHIVE
August 14th 2008 02:34
Yes, it’s time for festive blood to be spilled: my second Orble birthday! Horrorphile turns 2! The terror twos! ARGHHH!!! IT’S ALIIIIIIIIVE!!!
Last month I celebrated fifteen years of writing film criticism. My very first review was of Like Water for Chocolate published in a superb independent newspaper called City Voice (Wellington, New Zealand) back in July ’93. I was their resident film critic for four-and-a-half years before leaving for Sydney. Sadly the newspaper went under in 2001. I still look back fondly on those early years; the highlights included interviewing Guy Pearce and Roger Avary, and giving Independence Day such a scathing review that Hoyts Cinemas refused to run advertising with the newspaper. Thankfully my editor Simon Collins championed my cause.
After moving to Sydney I became resident film critic with street-press magazine Revolver for a couple of years or so. One of the highlights there was being given a two-page feature spread on the history of the modern horror movie. That was a treat. Cheers Oscar!
So, in celebratory self-indulgence I’ve decided to make a complete list of the movie reviews I’ve written for my Horrorphile blog over the past two years. There are well over two hundred of them! Not a bad effort considering many of the posts are teasers, quizzes, poster and art galleries, discussions and vitriolic rants.
I’ve listed the reviews in the order I wrote them and (painstakingly) provided them as hyperlinks to make it easy to access. Obviously there are many, many more movies still to review. Please feel free to suggest any titles I should keep my eyes peeled for.

I raise a chalice filled with the blood of a freshly slain virgin.
Can't believe you linked all your review. Your a maniac!
Great idea though, wish i'd thought of it myself...shit just realised it must be my 2nd birthday tommorow. Wonder if I will milk it? Of course i will.

My chalice chinks with yours! Blood spills and splashes ...
Yes, a novel idea indeed, but it was laborious as all Hell!
I look forward to your own birthday post!

How about a review of a movie I've only heard of, "Violent Shit"? It can't be good!

I concur - you are completely insane - it's appreciated - but man . . . that's outrageous.
Congratulations on your success and of course our collective thanks for not just your knowledge and abilities with the pen but for the entertainment.
Well done you.

And of course ackowledging my insanity in embarking on the hyperlink concept. Great idea, killer process!
Cibby, yeah, there must be an easier and less time-consuming way ...???
Violent Shit? Ha! I bet it's Asian. Maybe Italian, but probably Japanese.

Well done, you nutter. It all looks very impressive when collected on one page like that. My first birthday approaches and I am very excited. Not enough to embark on such a task of linkage, but excited nonetheless.
I want cake too. Can my slice incorporate the entire 'Happy Birthday' area?

First of all, a belated Happy Birthday to you. Secondly, I am actually surprised on my first visit to Horrorphile to see some of the films on your list.
Perfume is one. I have read the book but haven't seen the movie so I will look forward to reading what you have said about it.
I guess I thought I had "matured" out of horror films but your list (some of it anyway) will be worth me reading.
Good on you for the idea and the effort.

yes, I aim to enlighten as well as indulge. Although chiefly "horror" movies, I prefer to incorporate what I cover in a broader context which I call "nightmare" movies ... I hope you find something you like. And, for what it's worth, one should never mature out of enjoying horror movies ...

That was why the mature was in quotes -I like to kid myself but really there is a lot on the list that I really would like (and some I have seen already).
Look forward to going through them.
