A DAUGHTER'S NIGHTMARE!

April 28th 2008 01:43
I read in the news this morning the appalling story that has emerged from Austria regarding a father who imprisoned his daughter for twenty-four years in the home cellar and fathered several children with her!

According to the prosecution spokesman a 42-year-old woman, Elizabeth Fritzl, had accused her father, Josef, 73, of putting her to sleep with an anaesthetic, then handcuffing her in a locked basement. This was back in 1984 when Elizabeth was just 19. Apparently Josef had been sexually abusing Elizabeth since she was eleven. \

The case only came to the attention of police after one of the children, 19-year-old Kerstin was admitted to hospital in critical condition. Police discovered Elizabeth and three of the other siblings in the underground chamber yesterday.
A beautiful and normal Austrian home
A normal Austrian home, but who knows what's in the cellar these days ...

The basement had several rooms each 170cm high and was equipped with water and a television, however it was obvious to authorities the children had been living in a state of grim captivity.

Josef has a wife, Rosemarie, who apparently had no idea about the underground chamber, which beggars belief. Was she deaf and blind?!

Elizabeth and five of the children are currently in hospital being treated by a team of psychologists, while Josef is being interrogated by police.

How ghastly is that?! Truth is stranger and more nightmarish than fiction! It boggles the mind how screwed up some people are … And they get away with it for so long! It’s a real-life Flowers in the Attic taken to horrific extremes.

It’s extraordinary how inhumane people can be to each other, and even more disgusting is when it is crimes committed within the family.

Of course, being the twisted opportunist that I am, I immediately thought of the cinematic possibilities. This is a true crime tale just begging to be made into a horror movie, and a dark one too.

Possible titles that spring to mind; The Family, Dolls in the Cellar, Domesticity, My Heart Belongs To Daddy.

This will probably become fodder for a movie Bryn. And that's pathetic.

Bryn

I read the same story this morning and was tempted to write a post on it myself. Damn you beat me to it.

This is one odd case for the Ripley's show.
Believe it or not.

Yes I can see a movie out of this somewhere.
Perhaps an Austrian version of the family in the iron masks.

Not sure what to do with the father if this turns out to be true.
Handcuff him to bars of a prison in SE Asia?

Just read the story - that's almost too weird to be true. Why? Why would someone do that?

The kids are aged 5 to 20, as well... that's bizarre... all of them growing up in the cellar?

I saw a news segment while I was at the gym, looks as if once some of the children were old enough - he pretended they'd been dropped at the door by Elizabeth who'd "run away from home" - they were allowed to attend school, but then it begs the question, were they in such fear of their father that they didn't dob him in?!

Apparently he has just confessed to it all. Yeah, I wanted to write on this too, mainly because like you Bryn, I just don't understand how it all escaped the attention of his wife.

I'm sure all the gruesome details will be revealed soon enough.

Hi Bryn, old buddy!! Great to be reading your posts again...

What's the deal in Austria with imprisoning children?!

The mother in Linz who imprisoned her three daughters for 7 years (2005) Natascha Kampusch being held in a dungeon there for 8 years (2006) and now this. Coincidence? Trend? Scary stuff..

Ruby, I'm morbidly fascinated ...

Armenta, yeah, I would be interested in reading Natascha's book ... do you know what it's called?

Hey Bryn--as far as I know, she hasn't written a book and probably never will; classic Stockholm syndrome going on there. She's said that those years were between her and her captor and very personal.

Poor child. Her mother wrote a book, evidently to cash in, but it has no account of Natascha's ordeal. There's another book called "The girl in the cellar" that has no more info than you can find on Google news.

Looking into the Austria link further, a lot of the older homes had already had subterranean hiding spaces from the Nazi invasion. Interesting subject...

Armenta, yes very interesting ... The Natascha story smacks of horror-co-dependence ... ugh! I was so sure I read about her publishing a book, unless it's another girl ....
