MACHETE TRAILERS!
May 10th 2010 01:00
One of the things I really liked about Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino’s original Grindhouse (2007) double-feature release were the couple of fake trailers that proceeded Planet Terror and the several more that played during the “intermission” before Death Proof. My favourite was Eli Roth’s Thanksgiving (and I demand to see the feature!), but other favourite was Rodriguez’s Machete starring pizza-faced Danny Trejo as the titular anti-amigo.
Rodriguez had so much fun making the “fake” trailer that he decided a feature was on the crooked cards. Three years later the feature is about to be unleashed, and it’s now apparent Rodriguez has garnered a motley crew of A-listers slumming it with has-beens; Michelle Rodriguez (no relation to the director), Jessica Alba, Robert De Niro, Lindsay Lohan, Jeff Fahey, Cheech Marin, Don Johnson, and Steven Seagal. Rose McGowan reprises her role as Cherry Darling from Planet Terror, as does SFX guru Tom Savini as Deputy Tolo, and the Avellan twins, Electra and Elise, return also, this time as Nurse Mona and Sexy Nurse #2, respectively.
The new trailer uses most of the footage from the original “fake” trailer, but now intercuts the new footage featuring all the added cast members. Robert De Niro plays the senator Machete has been hired to kill (in the original trailer an unknown actor portrayed the politician in long shot), whilst Michelle Rodriguez plays what looks to be a homage to … in Thriller: A Cruel Picture AKA They Call Her One Eye.
I’m not entirely sold on the idea of using such well-known actors, but no doubt the movie will still be a lot of popcorn-throwing, beer-swillin’, Dutchie-passin’ mischief fun. I just hope it’s as outrageous, politically-incorrect, ultra-violent, and badly cut as the “fake” trailer suggested. Curiously, Rodriguez’s long-time assistant editor Ethan Maniquis has a co-director credit on the movie.
Machete is due for release in the US in September.

Furthermore, the Republicans use films like this to perpetuate the sterotype that all Mexicans are "violent" and a threat to the state and must be forcibly rermoved. I respect your opinion Bryn but I am boycotting this film and so is everyone else I know.

Anyone with half a brain can see that it's simply going to be a throwback to the days of fantastically un-PC exploitation films and, as such, anyone who would take it seriously is a lost cause anyway. The only thing boycotting this film is going to do is rob you of the experience of seeing it.
