The pursuit of RISE: BLOOD HUNTER
July 12th 2007 02:26
Writer/director Sebastian Gutierrez’s undead horror-thriller Rise: Blood Hunter (2007)began filming two years ago. In April of this year it played at the NYC Tribeca Film Festival, with a limited theatrical run in the states last month. Apart from Singapore and Turkey this month the only other scheduled release date is for Japan in August, so it looks like we’ll be seeing this sexy vampire revenge flick hitting the DVD shelves instead of the big screen down under.
Executive produced by Sam Raimi’s Ghost House Pictures production company, and starring Lucy Lui as a journalist who wakes in a morgue to discover she’s one of the undead in purgatory. She seeks revenge on the sect that put her there, drinking a little blood and shedding her clothes along the way.
Sounds like sensational B-grade late night fun to me! Also starring are Michael Chiklis as a troubled cop hot on her heels and in pursuit of the sect, James D’arcy as one of the key figures in the sect, Carla Gugino (Gutierrez’s girlfriend) as a femme fatale/agent provocateur, no doubt, and veteran Japanese actor, the late Mako in his last role.
Despite it’s exploitation elements and B-grade trappings Rise: Blood Hunter has some high production values; same producers as The Grudge remakes, John Toll as cinematographer and KNB EFX Group providing “dental prosthetics” (read: fangs), and from the look of the trailer it sports a striking visual style. Gutierrez has only made two other features, the noirish Judas Kiss (with Gugino in the lead) and She-Creature, a deadly mermaid flick that had strong potential (Stan Winston did the special effects), but stunk like a rotten fish.
The reviews have been mixed, but it sounds like Euro-horror fans won’t be disappointed, meaning lots of sex and death mixed together in a swirling, writhing, lurid composition. Apparently Lucy Lui does full frontal, leaving the usually less-clad Gugino in the more suggestive attire.
I’ve been a fan of Lucy’s since the early days of Ally McBeal (dare I say it, but when the TV show actually had more wit and style than most other glamour soaps). I enjoyed her in the trashy Charlie’s Angels, the bit-roles she did in Kill Bill, City of Industry and Payback, but I haven’t seen her in Cypher.
I’m a huge fan of Carla Gugino though, ever since seeing her first in Judas Kiss, then Snake Eyes and, of course, Sin City. She demands more leading roles, but doesn’t seem to get them very often.
It’s curious as to why some movies don’t get distributed properly, regardless of who the stars and filmmakers are. With horror movies so trendy these days, and with Sam Raimi as an executive producer one would assume Rise: Blood Hunter would’ve been given a decent theatrical release around the world, especially in countries that lap up the supernatural sex and violence (Europe and Australasia).
Gutierrez did write the awful Gothika (2005) though, and that turkey is flapping in the back of my mind. He wrote the screenplay for Snakes on a Plane (2007) as well. I haven’t seen that, but from all reports it gobbled like a prize one too. However he’s penned the remake of the Japanese horror flick The Eye which is directed by the two French men who made the ghost story Ils (2006, aka Them), and which stars Jessica Alba and Parker Posey, currently in post-production.

I can't believe we won't see this on the big screen in Australia. I'm a big Lucy Liu fan. I love her. I also think Carla is great too.....though my love of Carla stems from her brilliant performance in Son in Law, one of my favourite movies.......yes, I am aware of how sad that is. But it was a bloody good movie okay (and by good, I mean it was crappy as hell, but kind of charming).
Anyway, back to the topic. I'll be keeping an eye out for this one for sure
Great review

Carla I love, but this one sounds borderline. I love vampire movies to much to get excited about this because there have been so many disappointments in the genre the last decade.
I think I will wait for your verdict Bryn before parting with 90 minutes

guess this must be trash Lucy Liu day around here lolol cause I dislike her screen presence myself...
The characters she plays always make ya wanna go, "Shaddap ya stupid wench!"
*Snicker*
Ok, maybe that's just me...lol...but the trailer seems decent enough...and vampires? Yeah I'm down with that...
Anne Rice and I are pretty good bedfellows hehehhe
I may give it a look-see...maybe wait till it comes on cable though...not too keen on paying money for anything Liu does on screen...and I've seen enough full frontals that I just yawn my way through then now...
LOL
Title almost seems B grade to me...but we'll see...good read here my friend...
Take care,
Nick

yes, seems Ms Lui rubs a few people up the wrong way ... she can rub me any which way she likes frankly ... lol
The original single word title of Rise was much better, seems they had to elaborate for American audiences, (yawn) .... lol

Though this does remind me of some B-grade vampire flicks, at least this one has Lucy Liu and not Bon Jovi, a bunch of other no names and fake-chested girls.

By the way, isn't The Eye a Hong Kong film by the Pang's brothers as opposed to a Jap film?
I like the thought of seeing Jessica Alba in the remake though!

You know I love my B grade horror movies but this...this crosses the line.
Since I don't care for Lucy to begin with this movie had one strike against it...since she talks it has two and as for the full frontal...that clenched it.
Hell, I'm not a guy but the thought of seeing her full frontal gives me shrinkage.
Ugh

I recently saw Snakes on A Plane and was pleasently surprised. I hope this gets the chance it deserves!
