LIVING DEAD DOLLS
December 14th 2007 01:23
I’m back … did you miss me?
Return of the living dead … or something like that.
I haven’t quite recovered from my deep descent into the Darkness. I saw things that disturbed me to my very core, I experienced encounters which rattled my psyche profoundly, and left me down on my knees trembling, my body shake, shake, shaking like a leaf on a tree.
I visited an old friend who had once played a vampire in a short movie of mine, Penumbra (1993). She now has an eleven-year-old daughter and upon the shelves were several of her daughter’s dolls. But these were no ordinary Barbie dolls, these were Living Dead Dolls.
Stylishly macabre and very goth-cool.
So I looked up the manufacturer’s website, where “Dead is better”, and discovered they’ve been around for nearly ten years. Created by Ed Long & Damien Glonek, and produced by Mezco Toyz, they’re a series of classic-looking dolls, originally hand made; each one customised with permanent make-up and their own outfit, some with props (bleeding heart, pet vulture, chains, etc), to create individual horror figures from ghouls to ghosts, vampires to zombies. So far there are fourteen series of dolls (five dolls to a series), plus several exclusive designs.
Names such as Sadie, Sin, Lizzie Borden, Lilith, Ms. Eerie, Dahlia, Jinx, Grace of the Grave, Toxic Molly, Demonique, Killbaby, Frozen Charlotte, Morgana, and all seven of the Deadly Sins.
I noticed Chucky isn’t there …. Yet. Perhaps there’s a copyright issue. Perhaps Chucky doesn’t like mincing around with so many girls. But soon to be unleashed are Living Dead Dolls of Leatherface and Otis from House of 1000 Corpses and The Devil’s Rejects.
Creators Ed and Damien grew up as hunters and collectors and were raised on horror movies and it’s evident they have a strong passion for all things dark and delicious. Conceptually it’s The Addams Family meets Barbie & Ken meets The Exorcist meets Bratz meets Deadly Friend.
The Living Dead Dolls company now holds conventions and Halloween contests, with fan art and tattoos being regularly uploaded to their site. Although you can’t purchase the dolls directly from the website, they do list the store chains which stock them. Each doll costs between $US20-35 (depending on the retailer), with out-of-production dolls featuring much more on ebay, and other online market sites.
And each doll comes with its own death certificate. Just for good measure.
I think if I was to own one it would be Revenant; “One hell of a ghost and Carrion her pet, are two of the creepiest ghouls, you wish you never met … An image from the past, she roams eternally, reliving the horrid night of a twisted tragedy. To gaze upon this ghost, you'll witness her demise, for she is a harbinger of death as you will surely realize.” Her death is dated 6/6/60. She’s also the first Living Dead Doll to glow in the dark; my kind of undead friend.

I'd forgotten that they had a doll named Lilith. Excellent choice that. As for my own LDD, I have Sybil. We seem to be kindred spirits.
