“Invitation to Dance - It’s a Dance. And sometimes they turn the lights off in this ballroom. But we’ll dance anyway, you and I. Even in the Dark. Especially in the Dark. May I have the pleasure?” --- Stephen King ::::::::::: MY CRITERIA FOR DISCUSSION ENCOMPASSES THE HORROR GENRE AND BEYOND, SO I USE THE TERM "NIGHTMARE MOVIES". Inbred

You want blood? You got it. You want gore? You got it in spades. You want sick humour? You got it. You want loud, obnoxious, foul-mouthed, characters? You got ‘em in spades! You want a black comedy about hapless city folk trapped in the country town from Hell? Inbred (2012) is your hick cuppa tea! More head-splittin’, gut-bustin’, limb-choppin’ macabre fun than you can poke a hoe at. All washed down with a pint of swill.

Three guys and a girl, all of them young offenders, are out for a little rural character building. Their supervisors, Jeff (James Doherty) and Kate (Jo Hartley) have their hands full. They stop near Mortlake, a remote Yorkshire village, and get the teenagers’ hands dirty. Then it’s off to the local, The Dirty Hole (“Food No Served Here”), for home-made lemonade (“Tastes like piss!”, “It’s just warm, needs more ice.”) and pork scratchings (“hairy or smelly”).

The city slickers ...
The publican Jim (Seamus O’Neill) doesn’t take too kindly to the city slickers and nor do any of the other local mugs, most of whom have lop-sided grins and bad haircuts. If there was ever the wrong dive to find yourself in, then Mortlake is the hole you wanna climb out of quick smart. Of course, Jeff and Kate and their trustees have community work to do, so they’re not deterred by the locals’ odd behaviour and disgusting bar snacks.

... vs. the country hicks
Before you can say “Cahulawassee River” the inbreds have seized their prey and now its time for the show! Grab your stones and start clapping!

Director Alex Chandon (his first movie in ten years, and only his second feature) with his co-writer Paul Shrimpton have fashioned a heartfelt tribute to all things Hicksville and demented. Their hearts are stuffed in their cheeks and they’re chewing on them fervently. Inbred is not a movie to be taken seriously, nor is it one to marvel at the scripting or characterization. Inbred is a movie to be enjoyed on a superficial level, like skinning a rat.
Inbred headache
A splitting headache to be sure!
If you like your gore, Inbred has enough set pieces to satisfy the most hungry of horrorphiles. It’s absurd over-the-top graphic violence and much of it is done utilising CGI. But there is plenty of prosthetic stuff too, with one standout involving a shotgun wound to the hand. In fact there are three separate credits: Special Makeup Effects: Duncan Jarman, Prosthetic Makeup Effects: Linzi Foxcroft, and Blood & Gore Effects: Graham Taylor. Peter Jackson would be impressed.
Inbred showtime
One must keep the family entertained!
Seamus O’Neill steals the show as the village elder and voice of unreason. The rest of the cast aren’t anything to write home about, certainly not the teens and their guardians; the sooner they bite the bullet the better. For once - and this is what gives Inbred its swine-sly gravy – the local horse teeth have the blunt edge. Inbred is one to be nayed at, ferrrr surrr!
