“In films murders are always very clean. I show how difficult it is and what a messy thing it is to kill a man.” --- Alfred Hitchcock ::::::::::: MY CRITERIA FOR DISCUSSION ENCOMPASSES THE HORROR GENRE AND BEYOND, SO I USE THE TERM "NIGHTMARE MOVIES". A TASTE OF BLOOD at Fantastic Planet International Film Festival

October 26th 2009 22:43
Fantastic Planet international film festival
Paying tribute to the dark spirits of Hallowe’en, the organisers behind Sydney’s A Night of Horror international film festival are giving the horrorphiles amidst the sci-fi crowd a taste of blood at the inaugural Fantastic Planet international film festival at Dendy Cinemas, Newtown, which opens this weekend, Friday October 30th and runs until Friday November 6th.

Strigoi movie poster
Friday night, 9pm, is a screening of Strigoi (2009), a UK production shot on location in Romania; classic vampire territory. But this is no pedestrian vampire flick! This is a movie that digs deep to the dark essence of vampirism. The mythology behind the title is the belief that a person can rise again after death to seek justice if they’ve been wronged, their appetite and quest intensified by their thirst for blood. A Canadian short, Initiation, screens beforehand.

Zombieland movie poster
Saturday night - Halloween, 7pm, is a screening of American success story Zombieland (2009), a no-holds-barred action comedy set in a future where zombies have overrun the world. With Woody Harrelson leading the violent fray, it’s an hilarious, action-packed splat-fest streaked with dark arterial humour. If you arrive at the screening in Halloween attire you receive a free horror DVD or magazine.

Infestation movie poster
Later at 11.45pm is a screening of Infestation (2009), an American production (not to be confused with a dodgy recent Brit straight-to-DVD release), that takes the fear of creepy-crawlies to nightmarish new heights, but laced with biting humour. It’s been described as Shaun of the Dead meets Them! A Canadian short, Remote, plays beforehand. A special treat for patrons: a free horror DVD or magazine with each ticket purchased.

Well, I’m excited! Fantastic Planet should blow the cosmic cobwebs from your airlocks. I do love my sf, but I'd be lying if I didn't say that I'm definitely hanging for next year’s A Night of Horror! Bring on the new flesh!
