Who's your FAVOURITE KILLER?

September 26th 2007 04:39
Christopher Lee as Count Dracula
It might seem like an odd, vaguely distasteful question, but I know all the horrorphiles will embrace the question with homicidal hands and a fevered mind.

You’ve seen enough horror movies to know that about 99.9% of them feature some kind of murderer, or at least a menacing force capable of killing. Or at the very least an atmosphere of such dread and fear that you could possibly die of fright.

Now think of all the elements surrounding that killer that make him/her/it so “charismatic”. What are the killer’s attributes that make him/her/it so “appealing”? Is it the weapons they use? Is it the lines of dialogue they recite? Is it the mask they hide behind? Is it their sheer size? Perhaps it’s the outfit they wear?!

Maybe it’s simply because they’re invincible, or close to it.

Certainly my top five favourite killers are up there because of the otherworldliness they possess, whether it’s a kind of supernatural aura, or because they’re some kind of ferocious beast from another world. As much as I admire the straight-forward, down-the-barrel psychopath, they kinda bore me a little too. Mind you, and I might sound little hypocritical here, but the top of my list features the ultimate psychopath. But he’s in a league of his own.

Actually I have two psychos in my top five, what am I talking about?! But I’ll elaborate: the second one is also a human being that floats somewhere in the mythological realm of the supernatural, although not as unstoppable as my #1.

So, let’s cut to the chase, who are my top five favourite killers?

1. Michael Myers (Halloween)
Michael Myers in Halloween (1978)

2. Alien (Alien)
Ridley Scott's Alien

3. The Thing (The Thing)
John Carpenter's The Thing

4. John Ryder (The Hitcher)
Robert Harmon's The Hitcher

5. The Terminator (The Terminator)

The Terminator

Two psychopaths, two alien creatures, and a robot programmed to search and destroy. Nice.

So, who are your favourite killers? Lemme guess … Hannibal Lector? Jason Voorhees? Freddy Krueger? Norman Bates? Count Dracula, perhaps?

What about Death?
He can play chess and kill people.

Damo ... The Grim Reaper. The late Ingmar. Yes, and pontificate about life in a casual way at the same time.

Lestat from Anne Rice fame - he's a killer and damned sexy to boot - i'd go over to the dark side for him!!

Freddy was gross, but anyone who can produce a bloody display of dead mashed body sprayed from bed onto ceiling.......*vomit*

Jack Torence....."All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy"

Ohh, I like it.

I've always had a soft spot for Freddy Kreuger. So ugly, and he had that cool glove with knives for fingers. I would have accidentally cut my own head off with my cool glove if I was him.....but then that's probably why I'm not a psycho killer (or is that what I want you to think????)

I love Hannibal Lector. So charming, clever, witty. The perfect dinner companion.....except that it's possible that you'll be the main course.

The others that would go on my list are already contained in your top 5. The Thing, The Alien and Mike Myers.

I'm impressed with your choice of The Terminator. I wouldn't have thought of him. But an a most excellent killing machine!!!

Ohhh I don't like it...but I'm a hypocrite. If the Good Guys are doing the killing...well then...slash away.

So...because you've asked Favourite Killers not Favourite Villains...for me...

1. The Bride

2. James Bond

3. Nikita

4. John Cusack's Blank in 'Grosse Pointe Blank'

Hope you're well Bryn...

Kerryn,
Lestat, great choice!! I sooooo wish Rutger Hauer had got to play him back in the mid-80s! (close, but no cigar)

Kylie,
Hannibal was close to making my list ...

Dusk,
Hmmm, I hadn't anticipated someone interpreting my question as such ... I just thought "villains", yeah, but many of them never kill .... I hadn't thought of good guys who kill .... lol You're a spanner in the works.

Bryn,

I was thinking along the same lines as Dusk.

Wolverine
James Bond
Batman

Sorry to be a fly in the ointment too...

Hannibal Lector was the first to spring to mind for me as well.
If I can borrow from television, the character of Sylar is another favourite.

My favorite killers are Patrick Bateman and Dexter. Unfortunatly American Psyhco was arse as a film but I suppose that's wot you get with a female director at the helm of a movie as such please don't confuse that with a me being misongenistic it's just I don't think she grasped the wholepoint of the book, in that it was a sociual comment. Dexter say no more. Another killer (prose) that has caught my eye is Dante Greene he writes a blog Really Long Link

Lilla, hmph .... lol

Nina, yah, wid ya.

mr_tza, I beg to differ. I read the novel first (big fan of Easton Ellis), and immediately thought, there's no way anyone will be able to make this into a film. I actually think, and this is rare, she made a movie that spoke the central theme of Ellis's novel better than his novel. Bateman's descent into madness and paranoia. How much of what happens is perhaps in Bateman's own mind .... I don't think she missed the point at all. Have you talked about this with many others who've read the novel and seen the film? I'm curious, everyone whom I've discussed both with agree with me, but hey, each to their own ...

Mr Nice Guy, yeah, Hell hath no fury like Christine.

Definitely Hannibal Lecter - he's so refined... except when he's savaging someone's face.

Also Gabriel in Swordfish.

And the Red Queen in Resident Evil.

Ooooh, great question.

I concur with all of yours (Michael Myers tilting his head to look at his handiwork--awesome) (Seeing the alien attack from the Jonesy the cat's view--still gives me shivers) (Rutger Hauer--enough said!)..and then some:

-Angus Scrimm as The Tall Man..that is just one scary guy.

and Bette Davis as Baby Jane.

Bryn - it's an easy one for me... the killer in Deep Red. Used the creepy puppet, the shards of glass, the scalding water... ick!

Ooh, great question! There are so many!
My all time fave is a dargon named Archan....Pure evil. Great charcter. I adore Lestat, but Akasha is far more my taste....Id follow the Bloody Mary! Book version not the movie version.....Hollywood sucked the life outta that tale! Cant believe they didnt follow the true ending....Who could imagine hollywood opting out of a decapitation scene?
I also love The Bride....Probably my favourite killer, but all the members of The Deadly Viper Assasination Squad had their charms too....
Jane and John smith.
Arnies Character in 'True Lies'!
Xena, Callisto and Najara. Oh, and Gabrielle in the right episodes.
V makes a great fight scene. And he's merciless. Gotta love that.
Neve's character in 'Wild Things'
Probably TONS Im forgetting....But I always root for the bad guys....

I'm not worried about that, Damo. I'm a very aggressive smoker.

I even smoke asbestos occasionally.

Damo, smartfart.

Armenta, hahaha.

Aziza, gotta say, I couldn't stand Cruise as Lestat. I loved the novel though. Rutger Hauer should have played him. Period.

Mis, of course, of course ... the list jus' keeps on growin'!

God forgive me but I LOVE Jason Voorhees I always have despite the fact they have bastardized his character for many, many years(Damn you Michael Bay!). Also Bateman is a good choice too (reminds me of me!) and how about the Tallman from Phantasm? Also I think HENRY from Portrait Of A Serial Killer is a good choice too but that's just me

Zombi ... Jason was at his zenith in The Final Chapter ... Although I did enjoy him in Jason Lives (would love to see an uncut version of that!) His evil was emasculated in the recent remake, I agree.
Henry, The Tall Man, Jason Bateman, good choices! Hmmm, what about Pinhead?
