FATAL VISIONS: THE WONDER YEARS
July 4th 2012 00:33
If you’re an old school fan of Fangoria magazine living in Melbourne or Sydney you may remember an excellent magazine called Fatal Visions. It ran from 1989 to 2000, around twenty issues, and was edited by cult cinema freakazoid Michael Helms. I was a big fan of the bloody rag as it specialised in horror and exploitation and was hardened by a no bullshit attitude and heavily opinionated. Helms was like the down under version of Chas Balun.
Michael has lovingly fashioned a special edition compendium of Fatal Visions, the first six issues, covering its turd and sophomore years, to use Australasian/American high school vernacular. Not that the content is scatological or juvenile, but if it wasn’t sleazy and irresponsible then it just wouldn’t be cricket. If you get my drift.
Championing the midnight movie repertoire, the drive-in appeal, the grindhouse experience, Fatal Visions was a shot in the arm for extreme genreheads. When it folded (just as I was about to start writing for the publication!) there was a national sigh of despair. Good luck to finding any of the back catalogue beyond issue six!
Based in Melbourne Michael Helms continues to write freelance (he’s a regular contributor to Fangoria) and an avid supporter of the genre film industry in Australia. You can purchase his book Fatal Visions: The Wonder Years here (Australia or international) or here. Keep in mind that it is a limited edition print so get in quick.
The book will also be made available to buy at Monster Pictures’ upcoming Monster Fest in Melbourne. Any further enquires can be directed to fatalvisions1 [at] gmail [dot] com or mailed to PO Box 1006, Thornbury, VIC 3071, Australia.
Long live the old flesh!
