DEEP RED, SUSPIRIA AND TENEBRE SCREEN AT MELBOURNE ITALIAN FILM FESTIVAL!
August 29th 2011 00:32
This is the kind of announcement that makes me salivate. It's also the kind of news that has me utterly frustrated that I don't live in Melbourne! Argghh!
The annual Lavazza Italian Film Festival, in conjunction with Cult Vault - a Palace Westgarth cinema program - are proud to present three cult classic Dario Argento movies on the big screen! And you couldn't get three finer examples of this cinematic nightmare magician than Deep Red (1975), Suspiria (1977), and Tenebre (1982).
"Giallo all'italiana - The Cinema of Dario Argento" is the name of the mini-retrospective, although technically Suspiria isn't a giallo (a sub-genre that took its name from the lurid, yellow-covered crime novels that were popular in Italy in the 60s and 70s), as it's a tale of witches and the supernatural. I'm a huge fan of Argento's early gialli, and his supernatural flicks, especially the first two parts of his Three Mothers trilogy - Suspiria and Inferno (1980).
The chance to see digitally re-mastered projections of these widescreen movies is a treat that any True Believin' horrorphile living in Melbourne cannot miss! Having recently seen a digitally re-mastered projection of Apocalypse Now (1979), I can attest to the stunning pristine sound and image that the Argento movies will be. This is essential viewing!
Deep Red screens Friday 16th September, 11.30pm, Palace Westgarth.
Suspiria screens Friday 23rd September, 11.30pm, Palace Westgarth.
Tenbre screens Friday 30th September, 11.30pm, Palace Westgarth.
All Tickets $10 each, or all three movies for $24 including a complimentary "Cinema Amore" DVD (a vintage Italian movie) while stocks last. Poster giveaways on the night also. Book tickets via the Italian Film Festival website.
