A NIGHT OF HORROR 2011 AWARDS
April 12th 2011 04:22
The 5th annual A Night Of Horror International Film Festival is over for another year. There were more low-budget, indie features than in the 3rd and 4th years, and only one feature was from Europe, but the audience attendance was up and the enthusiasm amongst the attending horrorphiles was, as always, feverish. Three Australasian features, The Tunnel (2011), The Reef (2011), and Wound (2010), garnered a lot of attention and accolades, which was great to see.
I was on the jury for the short films, along with Steven Kastrissios, director of The Horseman (2010), and Stefan Popescu, co-director of the Sydney Underground Film Festival, but the number of films nominated (considering how many were screened throughout the festival) was scarce. I’ll be doing a wrap-up of the short films in another separate post.
On the feature jury panel was Ursula Dubrowsky, who won Best Australian Director in 2009 for Family Demons, Empire writer David Michael Brown, and distributor Antony Ginnane. The awards were announced on Festival Closing Night after the screening of Absentia (2010).
Best Film: Wound
Best Director: David Blyth (Wound)
Best Australian Film: The Reef
Best Australian Director: Carlo Ledesma (The Tunnel)
Best Special Effects: The Reef
Best Male Performance: Damien Walshe-Howling (The Reef)
Best Female Performance: Kate O’Rourke (Wound)
Independent Spirit Award (feature): Skew (2011)
Director’s Choice Award: Absentia (2011)
Best Short Film: Cosas Feas (2010)
Best Lovecraft Short: To My Mother And Father (2010)
Best Animated Short: MutantLand (2010)
Best Australian Short: Home (2010)
Independent Spirit Award (short): Axed (2011)
Audience Choice Award (Best of the Australian Showcase): The Zombie Monologues (2010)
As for my favourites? I have yet to view the two dozen or so shorts that weren’t nominated (stay posted), but I saw twelve of the fifteen features. Although there weren’t any movies of the same calibre as The Broken (2008), The Children (2008), The Revenant (2009), or Left Bank (2009), there was still much to relish and savour.
Horrorphile's picks
Overall favourite: Midnight Son (2011).
Most entertaining: The Last Lovecraft: Relic of Cthulhu (2009)
Scariest: The Reef
Creepiest: The Tunnel and Absentia
Most original: Wound, Absentia, and Skew
Most outrageous: Wound.
Most nightmarish (but ironically, most disappointing): #12 (2011)
NB: As I mentioned above I will do a separate post on the best of the festival short films later in the week.
