“Night brings terror. Strange, alien forms move restlessly across the face of the earth. Fear, horror and death follow in their wake. The sky is dark; the moon has not yet risen; the stars seem too frightened to shine ..." --- Drake Douglas (introduction to Horrors)

THE ART LAIR - V

If only the modern horror movie was as richly textured, boldly formed, and palpably fearsome as the art work on display here in The Art Lair, I’d be a happy little chappy!

Spider nightmare
Nightmares are made up of all sorts of nasty, horrendous elements. They play upon your deep-rooted fears. They thrust you into the realm of violent death. Torture you with the prospect of serious pain and anguish. Sometimes there’s no blood whatsoever; instead they can simply consist of a normal reality where everything seems right, but something is intrinsically and very distressingly wrong.

Horror movies eat nightmares for breakfast.

So what would be the scariest situation you could find yourself in? What basic scenario would be the one you’d crap your pants in? Where shivers would ripple up and down your spine? A cold sweat would break out upon your brow? Goosebumps of terror would run along your arms?

I know I’d lose my marbles if I was thrust into a dark dank pit about 2mx2m which was filled with enormous tarantulas. I know tarantulas don’t possess a deadly bite per se, but I’m arachnophobic when it comes to the hairy spiders. Tarantulas are huge and hairy, and yeah, the bite would definitely hurt, so if there were a lot of them and they felt threatened … Add a few dozen funnelweb spiders and the game is over grover.

I know I’d shit myself something chronic if I was set adrift on the ocean on a small makeshift raft 2mx2m pitching and lolling on a huge swell, and surrounding me were several large hungry great white sharks, and the raft’s wooden surface was slippery.

Get my drift?

What would yours be?

I Spit in Your Grave movie poster
It might sound like a silly question coming from a horrorphile, but let’s face it; there is the odd movie that crosses the line. To be precise, each person has their own boundaries of what they find truly upsetting, or where a director has taken something too far, and crossed into a territory which can only cause outrage in the viewer.

On one hand horror movies are meant to be confronting and disturbing. There are movies which can skillfully scare the pants off of you with the use of suggestion and implication. And there are movies that mortify you by depicting the most heinous images of physical corruption. So there’s the psychological and there’s the visceral

The Bride of Frankenstein Elsa Lanchester
My apologies for the infrequent posts of late, and especially the lack of posts during the last week, there’s a legitimate reason: I got married on Saturday March 1st. That’s right; I tied the knot with my partner of four years, and celebrated with a glorious wedding in Watson’s Bay, Sydney.

Tomorrow we fly out of the country and embark on what plans to be a sensational five-week honeymoon that takes us to Japan, England, Spain, Malta and France
